The task of an interpreter is to enable the communication between the speaker and the audience. The interpreter transmits the content of the speaker’s message by reproducing the speech from the source language into the target language of the audience. This can be done in using one of the following methods:
Simultaneous Interpreting
In simultaneous interpreting, the interpretation in the target language is delivered almost at the same time as the original speech. This interpreting mode requires some technical equipment such as soundproof interpreting booths, headphones and microphones. In certain situations, such as during guided tours or plant visits, a mobile tour guide system may be necessary. . Be aware that a mobile tour guide system is not a suitable alternative to interpreting booths.
Consecutive Interpreting
In consecutive interpreting, the interpretation is not rendered directly as is the case with simultaneous interpreting. The interpreter takes notes while listening to the speech. After each segment of the speech he reproduces the speaker’s ideas in the target language. This mode of interpreting does not require any technical equipment – with the exception of a microphone to ensure a better sound in some cases.
Simultaneous and consecutive interpreting include other modes of interpreting, as for instance:
Liaison Interpreting Liaison interpreting is intended for a small group of people. No technical equipment or note-taking is needed here. Examples of liaison interpreting are contract negotiations or trials.
Guided Interpreting Guided interpreting is suitable for individuals or groups. Typical examples are guided tours, trade show presentations or sightseeing tours.
Whispered Interpreting/chuchotage In whispered interpreting or chuchotage, the interpreter whispers the interpretation into the listeners’ ears (max. two people). The interpretation is rendered simultaneously and without the use of any technical aid.
Media Interpreting In media interpreting, the interpretation is broadcasted live on television or on the radio.
